A sequel to 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' was written but remains unproduced due to financial constraints, co-director Jonathan Goldstein confirmed to ScreenRant.
Script Completed but Shelved
Jonathan Goldstein, who directed the original with John Francis Daley, disclosed that the duo was commissioned to write a follow-up. 'I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons,' Goldstein explained. 'They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.'
Box Office Performance
The 2023 film, starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis, was critically acclaimed with a 91% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a 92% audience score. However, the film's global box office take of $205.46 million against a $150 million production budget left Paramount and Entertainment One hesitant about funding a sequel.
Cast and Crew Perspectives
Hugh Grant, who played the antagonist Forge, previously voiced his confusion over the film's commercial performance. In a 2024 Vanity Fair interview, he remarked, 'It’s the biggest mystery to me — why didn’t anyone do market research before? I think that’s what went wrong: basically, people just thought, I don’t want to see a film about this game. Why had no one asked the public?'
Future Projects
Goldstein and Daley, known for films like 'Vacation' and 'Game Night,' are set to direct 'Renegades,' an action thriller based on a Will Simmons short story, and are also developing the next 'Star Trek' installment for Paramount. The fate of the 'Dungeons & Dragons' sequel remains uncertain.
Before 'Honor Among Thieves,' the first live-action 'Dungeons & Dragons' film in 2000 was poorly received, grossing $33 million on a $45 million budget, with two sequels airing on Syfy in 2005 and 2012.
