The Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have reached a tentative four-year contract agreement after nearly a month of negotiations.
Pending Approval
The agreement, announced Tuesday, is subject to review by the DGA's national board before details are released to its approximately 19,500 members, which include directors, assistant directors, and production managers. If approved, the pact will proceed to a member ratification vote. The current deal expires on June 30.
Industry Reactions
The AMPTP expressed satisfaction with the deal, stating, "We appreciate the hard work and commitment of our guild partners in achieving a fair deal that helps advance a stable and successful entertainment industry."
Union Concerns
Negotiations began on May 11, with the DGA focused on job creation amid a reported 35% drop in TV employment and an 8-12% decline in film jobs in 2024. DGA President Christopher Nolan highlighted these challenges, alongside efforts for a federal tax incentive and increased employer contributions to the union health plan.
Generative AI was another key topic, with the DGA seeking a role in regulating AI applications affecting members' work.
Longer-Term Stability
Entertainment companies aimed for a four-year agreement, similar to recent deals with writers and actors, to ensure labor stability and facilitate longer-term business planning. Leading negotiations were DGA national executive director Russell Hollander and AMPTP president Gregory Hessinger.
