Clio, a Canadian legal tech company, has reached $500 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR), marking a significant milestone as the company continues to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its offerings.
AI Drives Legal Tech Growth
Jack Newton, Clio's co-founder and CEO, believes that legal tech is set to become a major beneficiary of the AI era. Since integrating AI into its platform in 2023, Clio has seen a sharp acceleration in revenue growth, surpassing $200 million in ARR by mid-2024 and doubling that figure within a year.
According to Newton, “LLMs are so excellent for coding because all the existing code in the world is a huge repository to train on. The analogy to legal is really clear.” Law firms, possessing vast corpuses of contracts and agreements, provide a rich data source for AI models.
Rising Competitors in the Field
Clio is not alone in experiencing a surge in revenue thanks to AI. Harvey, a four-year-old company offering LLM AI for law firms, reached $190 million in ARR by the end of 2025, as shared by co-founder and CEO Winston Weinberg on LinkedIn. Meanwhile, Legora, a key rival, reported surpassing $100 million in ARR just 18 months after launching its platform.
Legal AI Market Dynamics
Despite scrutiny over the definition of ARR in legal tech, AI's potential to automate time-consuming tasks like document review and drafting is widely recognized. Anthropic, a major player in AI, recently announced a suite of legal-specific features, expanding its Claude for Legal plug-in. This move, however, has complicated dynamics for companies like Harvey and Legora, which use Claude as a core model, making Anthropic both a supplier and competitor.
Clio's Strategic Moves
Clio's optimism in the legal AI market is backed by its recent $500 million Series G funding round, valuing the company at $5 billion. Clio provides law firms with tools for time-tracking, invoicing, and payments. Its $1 billion acquisition of data intelligence platform vLex last year enhances its AI capabilities, enabling lawyers to perform legal research through Clio's platform.
