The 2026 Border Security Expo in Phoenix, Arizona, featured 193 vendors presenting surveillance products to government representatives in a bid to bolster border security efforts. Among the exhibitors was VirTra, showcasing its V-300 S-Screen Simulator, which uses realistic auditory scenarios to train security personnel.
Chummy Relationships
Despite some public protests, the atmosphere inside was congenial, with former border czar Tom Homan praising the Trump administration's immigration policies. Homan, who had faced allegations of accepting bribes, dismissed criticism and heralded record-low border crossings and high arrests as successes.
Industry and Policy
The expo attracted not only DHS but also local law enforcement agencies seeking to benefit from increased federal funding under Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Vendors, including AI software providers, sought to capitalize on the administration's focus on enforcing immigration laws nationally.
Emphasis on Interior Security
Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott emphasized that border security was now considered an interior issue, with apprehensions at the border leading to further arrests within the country. The administration's approach has shifted towards targeting immigrants residing in the US.
Surveillance Technology
Babel Street, a company providing analytics and social media monitoring tools, was among those present. Its Babel X platform, which scans social media across multiple languages, has been used by CBP since 2015. The platform has raised privacy concerns, with DHS contracts exceeding $21 million since its inception.
Denaturalization efforts were also highlighted by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who announced plans to surpass previous administrations in filing denaturalization cases, framing it as a border security measure.
The expo underscored a broader strategy of integrating advanced surveillance technologies into national security efforts, as the Trump administration continues to prioritize immigration enforcement.
