Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen has been named head of the Asian New Talent jury at the Shanghai International Film Festival. This honor comes as he concludes his 'Growing Up' trilogy with We Are All Strangers, which debuted in Berlin and opened festivals in Hong Kong and Udine.

Chen's career began with the Camera d'Or-winning Ilo Ilo in 2013, followed by 2019's Wet Season. His films have consistently explored familial and societal themes in Singapore. Now, as he takes on the role of jury president, Chen reflects on the opportunities film festivals provide for emerging talent.
Evaluating Emerging Talent
Chen joins directors Kamila Andini, Liu Jiayin, Farkhat Sharipov, and actress Wen Qi to evaluate 12 films by first- or second-time filmmakers. Past participants of the Asian New Talent section include directors Ning Hao and Makoto Shinkai, reinforcing the section's reputation for discovering groundbreaking filmmakers.
When selecting films, Chen prefers to watch without prior knowledge to maintain objectivity, though he admits the lineup has piqued his interest. 'There are already a few titles and directors that have caught my eye,' he said.
Impact of Festivals on Chen's Career
Chen credits festivals with launching his career, with Ilo Ilo winning over 40 awards globally. He believes in their power as launchpads for young filmmakers, stating, 'Film festivals are such important launchpads for young filmmakers.'
New Ventures and Shanghai's Influence
Chen is venturing into television with a 12-part series produced by his company, Giraffe Pictures. This Chinese-Singapore co-production, developed with Meng Xie, will explore themes of food and family. Production is set to begin soon.
On Shanghai, Chen expresses admiration for the city’s unique blend of cultures, particularly enjoying the French Concession area. 'I love Shanghai. It’s one of my favorite cities in the world,' he enthused, highlighting the city’s galleries and boutiques.
