YouTube's 'Open Door' Gets Feature Deal

Kevin Cate's viral sci-fi short 'Open Door,' which has amassed nearly 15 million views across YouTube shorts, TikTok, and Instagram, is set to be adapted into a feature-length film through a six-figure development deal.

Industry's Shift to Digital Creators

This move aligns with the industry's growing interest in YouTube creators and filmmakers with established online audiences, highlighted by the success of recent breakout horror films like 'Obsession' and 'Backrooms'.

Returning Cast and Crew

Cate, who co-wrote the spec script with 'IO' screenwriter Charles Spano, confirmed that Sean Anthony Baker and Mia Matthews will reprise their roles in the feature. The short film, which follows a surreal, genre-bending journey of Malcolm Powers through an elevator ride from hell, will continue under the direction of Cate's Clinging Vine Films and executive producer Rick Kearney.

"I literally can’t go a day without someone asking me what our characters saw down there," Cate stated. "And I really, really can’t wait to show everyone — and give some hints along the way."

Building Buzz and Hints

In conjunction with the development news, Cate has launched a website to provide fans with clues and updates, including theories and behind-the-scenes content. The film's budgeting process is expected to conclude later this month, with ongoing efforts to raise funds and consider additional casting options.

"We’ve written some of the most incredible roles to make this a next-level project," Cate added. "Right now, it’s just a matter of showing the demand and finding our village."

Emerging Talent in the Spotlight

The trend of YouTube creators transitioning to feature filmmakers continues with upcoming projects from 'Portrait of God' director Dylan Clark and 'Mora' director Sam Evenson, showcasing the digital platform's role in the evolving landscape of film production.
