Microsoft is testing new customization features for Windows 11, offering users the ability to reposition the taskbar and adjust the Start menu size. These features are currently available to Windows 11 Insiders in the Experimental channel.
Taskbar Customization
The latest update allows the taskbar to be moved to the bottom, top, left, or right side of the screen. Icon alignment within the taskbar can also be adjusted, and the Start menu drawer can open from any taskbar position. Additionally, users can opt for a shorter taskbar, useful for devices with smaller displays.
Microsoft previously hinted at this feature in March, aiming to rebuild trust with users by enhancing customization options. The taskbar's flexibility is part of Microsoft's ongoing efforts to improve user experience.
Start Menu Adjustments
The Start menu will soon include new toggles allowing users to show or hide sections like “Pinned,” “Recommended,” and “All.” Notably, the “Recommended” section will be renamed “Recent” to more accurately describe its contents, such as recently installed apps and used files. Users can also hide their name and profile picture from the Start menu, which is beneficial when sharing screens or making presentations.
Availability and User Trust
These features are set to roll out in the coming weeks to the Experimental Channel. Microsoft design director Diego Baca emphasized the importance of these updates in building user trust, stating, “Start and taskbar are where that trust is tested most, every time you sit down at your PC.”
