Sydney Sweeney has opened up about her character Cassie's OnlyFans storyline on the third season of Euphoria. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Sweeney discussed the evolution of Cassie, a character who gains popularity as an OnlyFans model following her marriage to Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi.
Cassie’s Quest for Validation
"From the very beginning, you can see that Cassie has this need to be loved. She has a need to be validated by other people," Sweeney explained. "She doesn’t know how to love herself unless someone else loves her." She added that Cassie was captivated by the idea of widespread recognition, feeling her world was expanding.
Nudity and Artistic Vision
Cassie's storyline was notable for its nudity, a creative decision that was initially questioned by creator Sam Levinson. According to Sweeney, she challenged Levinson's initial hesitation to include nudity, asserting, "Are you kidding? I’m playing an OnlyFans model. You’re telling me you’re going to like, skirt around it?" This commitment to authenticity was at the forefront of her portrayal.
Commitment to Vision
Sweeney shared that she had detailed discussions with Levinson about Cassie's arc. "He sent me all the scripts and it already had all of Cassie’s scenes in it, the OnlyFans scenes," she explained. "He asked me how I felt about it, and I told him, ‘Look, I’m playing a character.’" Sweeney emphasized that while she may not personally agree with all of Cassie's decisions, bringing the character to life in a way that aligned with Levinson's vision was crucial.
Scenes Cut from the Final Season
Sweeney also revealed that a pole dancing scene featuring Cassie, filmed inside Alamo Brown’s strip club, was cut from the final season. Describing the scene, she mentioned, "There were some really fun scenes between us when Cassie goes to the strip club with Maddie (Alexa Demie) and they’re doing the photoshoots." Cassie's excitement about the dancers on stage led to her own pole dancing performance, for which Sweeney took lessons. Although the scene was removed, she reflected on the experience as both fun and challenging.
