Streaming Films Show Decline in Diversity

UCLA's Hollywood Diversity Report indicates a significant decline in representation for women and people of color in 2025 streaming films, noting a decrease in minority employment across directors, writers, leads, and cast.

Decrease in Minority Representation

The report highlights a drop from a 2024 high of 51% in lead actors of color to 36% in 2025, marking the first time in three years their share fell below U.S. population representation. Additionally, films directed by women dropped to 23.6%, the lowest since the report began tracking in 2022.

“After the big numbers we saw for diversity in streaming originals just a couple of years ago, we now see the path closing for people of color and women to premiere their film on a major streamer,” said Ana-Christina Ramón, co-founder of the report.

Industry Challenges

Executive Vice Provost Darnell Hunt attributes these declines to industry contraction, DEI backlash, and budget cuts. He notes the impact of the current political climate on opportunities for underrepresented filmmakers, stating, “As budgets tighten, opportunities for filmmakers of underrepresented backgrounds are always the first to be squeezed out.”

Impact on Casting

Only 25.8% of streaming films featured majority people of color casts in 2025, down from 41%. Sociologist Michael Tran comments on the shift, “It wasn’t too long ago that streaming was the place where people of color and women found their footing.”

KPop Demon Hunters Stands Out

Despite the overall decline, Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters was a standout, illustrating that diverse representation can engage audiences. Nico Garcia from UCLA notes, “The film is a prime example of how culture circulates and how diverse representation doesn’t alienate audiences. It can bring them in.” Notably, more households with Latinas watched the film than those with Asian women, despite its Korean cultural focus.
