Tensions Over Recent Firings
In an interview with Geoff Bennett from PBS News, Kroft addressed the firings of Scott Pelley, executive producer Tanya Simon, and correspondents Cecilia Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi. Kroft described these moves as detrimental to the show and its substantial audience. He linked the turmoil to a $17 million lawsuit settlement following a controversial interview with Kamala Harris.
Kroft suggested that these changes are influenced by Paramount's desire to secure FCC approval for a merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. He stated, "Paramount has just decided that was the only thing that was going to be important."
Allegations Against Bari Weiss
Kroft noted that Pelley had questioned Bari Weiss, CBS News' editor-in-chief, about Simon's firing, receiving no response. He conveyed that the FCC and the president have criticized CBS's operations, pushing for 60 Minutes to be taken off the air.
Pelley's dismissal followed a heated meeting with new executive producer Nick Bilton, during which Pelley accused Weiss of undermining the program.
Concerns Over Journalistic Integrity
Geoff Bennett asked Kroft about the balance between business decisions and journalistic integrity. Kroft responded, "This is journalistic interference. It makes no business sense whatsoever. 60 Minutes is still doing very well; it’s the highest-rated news program on television." He highlighted the program's audience growth of nine percent in the previous year.
