Steve Buscemi's Emmy-winning web series, Park Bench With Steve Buscemi, premiered in May 2014, long before the viral talk show trend took off.

Genesis of the Show

The concept for Park Bench originated during Buscemi's work on promotional shorts for Vampire Weekend. After meeting carpenter Geo Orlando, Buscemi envisioned a show centered around informal chats on park benches. He told Time in 2015, "Geo was so natural and just a great sidekick, if you will, that I said to my producing partner and our producing team, 'I think I can build a whole show out of Geo and I on park benches.'"

Debut and Format

The show was picked up by AOL Originals and featured Buscemi traveling around New York with Orlando, interviewing a diverse range of guests. These included celebrities like Chris Rock, Fred Armisen, and even New York City's Mayor Bill de Blasio, alongside non-celebrities such as Buddhist nun Ani Trime Lhamo. Buscemi, simultaneously working on the final season of Boardwalk Empire, directed and hosted the series.

Recognition and Evolution

The first season's success, including an Emmy nomination for short form nonfiction program, led to a second season. This time, guests featured John Turturro, Debi Mazar, Paul Auster, Letitia James, and John Oliver. The show won the outstanding short form variety series Emmy in 2016. Buscemi remarked to THR, "I don’t know that I’m a great interviewer, but I do like to talk to people."

Legacy

Park Bench set a precedent for informal, conversational talk shows that would later become popular on digital platforms. Its unique format and Buscemi’s unpretentious style resonated with audiences, securing its place in the annals of innovative TV programming.
