Stephen Kalyn, the 28-year-old actor from Markham, Ontario, has transitioned from aspiring hockey player to the beloved character Dean Di Laurentis in Prime Video's 'Off Campus.'
From Hockey to Acting
Kalyn's early years were spent on the hockey rink, playing since age six and reaching the AA tier. However, as high school ended, he realized hockey wasn't his future. "I could still love the game no matter what," Kalyn told The Hollywood Reporter. Acting became his new passion after playing Danny Zuko in a high school production of 'Grease.'
Rise to Fame
Kalyn steadily built his acting career with roles in shows like 'Gen V' and 'Motorheads.' By 2023, acting became his main career. His big break came with 'Off Campus,' a series based on Elle Kennedy's book series, where he plays a party-loving hockey player at Briar University.
Landing the Role of Dean
Kalyn originally auditioned for John Logan but later got called back for Dean. "I was at the gym... and got a call," he recalled. After a whirlwind of auditions and chemistry reads, he secured the role, describing it as "one of the greatest moments of my life." Kalyn found camaraderie with co-stars Belmont Cameli, Antonio Cipriano, and Jalen Thomas Brooks during a two-week hockey bootcamp.
On-Screen Chemistry and Future
Kalyn and Mika Abdalla, who plays his love interest Allie Hayes, worked on their chemistry from early on. A Pilates class mishap led to bonding over dinner, setting the stage for their compelling on-screen connection. Looking to season two, Kalyn anticipates a "sweet, loving, and heartbreaking" continuation of Dean's story.
Kalyn hopes 'Off Campus' will resonate with audiences, particularly addressing toxic masculinity. "I hope we can connect with the entire audience," he said, emphasizing the importance of expressing emotions. Inspired by actors like Ryan Gosling, Kalyn is focused on diversifying his career while dedicated to the success of 'Off Campus.'
