SAG-AFTRA's 2026 contract negotiations with studios and streamers resulted in significant advancements including AI protections and a pension plan merger, according to union leaders.
AI Protections and Pension Merger
SAG-AFTRA chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and president Sean Astin credited negotiations led by Greg Hessinger for the new contract's success. Astin emphasized the importance of securing AI protections, stating the contract now includes provisions to limit synthetic technology use to cases providing 'significant additional value' over human performance or digital replicas.
Crabtree-Ireland highlighted the merger of SAG and AFTRA pension plans, a goal since 2012, as a major achievement. "Finally having that pathway laid out is very gratifying," he said, noting it could have benefited nearly a thousand members last year alone.
Four-Year Deal and Industry Stability
Despite the rapid evolution of AI, the union agreed to a four-year contract term, similar to the Writers Guild of America. Crabtree-Ireland explained the decision hinged on securing the right protections and benefits, including AI provisions and pension contributions, across 56 major contract areas.
Astin dismissed any notion of a standard negotiation pattern, asserting, "Our contract is so wildly different from the other unions." He stressed the importance of approaching bargaining as part of normal business, without resorting to brinksmanship.
Challenges and Future Goals
Both leaders acknowledged areas needing more progress, particularly residuals. Astin expressed a desire to ensure members share in the financial success of their work, while Crabtree-Ireland looked forward to evolving AI terms further.
They also noted the unique negotiating environment with Hessinger, a former SAG and AFTRA leader. Crabtree-Ireland credited Hessinger with fostering a constructive atmosphere that allowed for long-term relationship building without crises.
Looking Forward
Astin and Crabtree-Ireland remain optimistic about the future, with Astin highlighting the importance of thoughtful bargaining. "Being reasonable does not mean being weak," he affirmed, expressing pride in the union's achievements and approach.
