Macaulay Culkin Mourns Catherine O'Hara's Passing

Macaulay Culkin expressed his grief over Catherine O'Hara's death, feeling they had 'unfinished business'. O'Hara, known for roles in 'Home Alone' and 'Schitt's Creek', passed away on January 30, 2026, at 71 from a pulmonary embolism with rectal cancer as an underlying condition.

The Impact of O'Hara's Death

In an interview with Gentleman's Journal, Culkin shared how O'Hara's passing affected him. "When Catherine passed away in January, that hit me. That hit me pretty good, because, you know, it was just too soon," he said. "I felt that we had unfinished business. I definitely feel like I had unfinished business with her, you know? I feel like I owed her a favor — and I don’t like having an outstanding debt."

O'Hara's Legacy

O'Hara's career spanned over five decades, starting with the Canadian sketch show Second City Television and including iconic films like Beetlejuice and Home Alone. Her role in Schitt's Creek earned her critical acclaim later in life.

A Heartfelt Reunion

In December 2023, Culkin and O'Hara reunited when Culkin received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. O'Hara delivered a touching speech, highlighting Culkin's humor and resilience. "Macaulay — this beautiful, dear little 10-year-old boy — was called a superstar, a moneymaker, one of the hottest leading young men in Hollywood by the world over. How does anyone survive that? Well, I believe you'd have to possess a certain quality, a gift that dear John Hughes obviously recognized in you, Macaulay: your sense of humor," O'Hara said.

She concluded with, "Thank you for including me — your fake mom who left you home alone not once, but twice — to share in this happy occasion. I’m so proud of you." Culkin was visibly moved, wiping away tears during their embrace.

A Personal Tribute

Following O'Hara's death, Culkin posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram: "Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you but I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later."

O'Hara's contributions to film and television, as well as her personal connections with co-stars like Culkin, underscore her lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
