Rob Reiner's portrayal of George Washington in Larry David's HBO series Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness serves as a poignant final role, offering a satirical critique of Donald Trump. The episode aired on July 3, a day before Independence Day, and was kept secret until release.
Final Role's Impact
Reiner's performance allows him to posthumously critique Trump, whom he frequently criticized. Director Jeff Schaffer told Variety, “It’s coming out on Fourth of July weekend, and if it in any way spoils a sad octogenarian’s weekend, then oh well!”
In the show, Reiner's Washington declares he won’t seek a third term, humorously suggesting a constitutional amendment to prevent future presidents from extending their power. The sketch quickly becomes a comedic critique of Trump, with Larry David, in colonial attire, questioning, “What if there’s some asshole in office, some narcissistic prick who doesn’t follow the Constitution?”
Larry David's Take
Larry David comically imagines a president who enriches himself, deploys troops against citizens, and denies election losses, calling such a figure a “sociopath” and “insecure, lying asshole.” The sketch intensifies with characters like Jimmy Kimmel's colonist questioning the president’s sensitivity to criticism.
The scene culminates in chaos among the colonists, ending with Reiner's Washington observing, “We’re fucked,” followed by an “In Memoriam” card for Reiner.
Behind the Scenes
Schaffer shared insights on working with Reiner, who was known for his beard but complied with Larry David's request to shave for authenticity. Filming took place at Universal on November 13, a month before Reiner's tragic death on December 12. Schaffer and David were editing the scene just days before the incident, adding emotional weight to Reiner's final appearance.
The cameo was swapped out at the Los Angeles premiere to keep it a surprise. Schaffer said, “We thought long and hard about where the sketch should air… and ultimately we decided that July 3 was the perfect time.”
The airing coincided with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, adding a layer of historical irony to Reiner's last role.
