Michael Stewart's long-held dream of presenting his Standing Ground collection at Paris haute couture shows becomes reality as it debuts at the Irish embassy on Monday. The County Clare native has been preparing for this moment in his London atelier, 180 Strand, with stylist Tallulah Harlech.
Elaborate Simplicity
Stewart's designs focus on creating simplicity through intricate elements. "I've had it in mind for a long, long time, that showing in haute couture in Paris is what I wanted to do," Stewart said. His work includes corseted underpinnings and draped skirts, all weighted with internal beading.
Inspired by Standing Stones
Stewart's creative process is inspired by Ireland's prehistoric standing stones, a theme that has evolved since his graduation from the Royal College of Art in 2017. "None of my stuff looks like a standing stone," Stewart noted, emphasizing that his work is a powerful emanation of imagined figures.
Persistence Pays Off
Standing Ground reflects Stewart's perseverance in a competitive industry. For five years, he worked without much recognition. "I was forced to be slow because when nothing happens for you, and nothing moves, to continue you have to have mettle, have resilience," he stated. Support from Lulu Kennedy at Fashion East shows in 2023 helped launch his brand.
Recognition and Clients
Winning the inaugural Savoir-Faire award of the LVMH Prize in 2024 gave Stewart the endorsement needed to join the prestigious couture calendar. Stewart's private client base has been expanding, thanks to his unique designs. "My clients are my best advertisements," he explained, preferring word-of-mouth over media engagement.
As Stewart's work is showcased at the Irish embassy in Paris, it's a significant milestone for the designer who values speaking only when necessary. "I think you should only open your mouth when you have something to say," he remarked, indicating his preference for letting his work speak for itself.
