RJ Scaringe Raises $12B in Three Startups

RJ Scaringe, the entrepreneur behind Rivian, has raised more than $12.3 billion across his three startups, with investors continuing to show interest. His latest venture, Mind Robotics, recently secured another $400 million, indicating ongoing enthusiasm.

Big Raises in a Competitive Field

While large funding rounds are common for defense tech or AI startups, Scaringe managed to raise $105 million in 2025 for Also, an electric micromobility company. This figure has now exceeded $300 million, with DoorDash among its backers.

Jiten Behl of Eclipse, a former Rivian executive, highlighted Scaringe’s communication skills and credibility as key to his success. “He’s not trying to undersell the difficulty or oversell the opportunity, and that’s an art,” Behl noted.

Unique Approach and Comparisons

Scaringe stands alongside prominent entrepreneurs like Elon Musk and Sam Altman as a serial founder who attracts substantial capital. However, insiders argue that Scaringe separates selling ideas from selling himself, making him distinct from others like Musk.

“He’s not trying to be an Elon,” Behl said, pointing out Scaringe’s focus on product enthusiasm rather than personal branding.

Balancing Business and Personal Life

Managing three companies while frequently traveling and maintaining a family life is challenging. Scaringe juggles responsibilities across locations such as Palo Alto and Rivian's Illinois factory, all while raising three sons with his ex-wife.

Joe Fath, another Eclipse partner, praised Scaringe’s engineering talent and design instincts. “Very few founders can operate at that level technically while also understanding what resonates emotionally with customers,” Fath commented.

Ongoing Momentum and Future Prospects

Rivian alone raised over $11 billion, with significant investments from Amazon, Ford, and others, culminating in a blockbuster IPO in 2021. The company’s market cap reached $100 billion at its Nasdaq debut, though it has since adjusted to $18.2 billion amid broader EV sector challenges.

Scaringe’s ability to secure funding continues with Also and Mind Robotics garnering over $1.3 billion. Partnerships like the $5.8 billion deal with Volkswagen and a $1.25 billion Uber robotaxi project further underscore investor confidence.

“Now, the big question is, how much can he do?” Behl pondered, emphasizing Scaringe’s view of creating significant value and impact without seeing limits.
