Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín's newly launched TVOD platform, Pijama, has secured significant distribution agreements with MK2, Alpha Violet, Visit Films, Les Films du Losange, Electric Shadow, and Utopia Films.
Platform Launch and Expansion
Launched on January 25 with titles from the Larrains' Fabula production company, Pijama expanded to iOS and Android in April, and recently added Roku, FireTV, LG, and Samsung. Pijama aims to provide a global distribution solution for films lacking worldwide sales.
Notable Titles and New Additions
Pijama's recent deals give access to several high-profile films. From MK2, titles like Mike Leigh’s “Secrets and Lies,” Sally Potter’s “Orlando,” and Michael Haneke’s “The Piano Teacher” are now available, albeit with geo-block restrictions. Alpha Violet contributions include Laurynas Bareisa’s “Drowning Dry” and Slaboshpytskiy Myroslav’s “The Tribe.” Pijama also features 24 films from Fabula, including “Neruda” and Oscar-winning “A Fantastic Woman.”
Addressing Distribution Gaps
The platform, which added 20 films in a single day last week, addresses a critical gap where 80% of films fail to secure distribution. This scenario restricts access to films for audiences and monetization opportunities for rights holders. Pijama aims to overcome these hurdles by offering a direct-to-viewer model.
Future Plans and Market Impact
Pijama plans to sign with two broadcasters soon, further solidifying its market presence. Juan de Dios Larraín noted the platform's genesis from frustration over distribution gaps, as seen with Sebastian Lelio’s “The Wave.” Pijama allows producers to directly upload films, set territories, and price rentals, providing a revenue stream and audience access.
Currently offering over 100 films, Pijama targets a curated selection of 100-200 films, with recommendations from sales agents and producers. At Cannes, Pijama executive Yira Vilaro explores further opportunities, while Juan de Dios Larraín plans appearances at Karlovy Vary, Locarno, Toronto, San Sebastián, and Cairo.
Marketing campaigns for producers and users are slated for late May and June, aiming to build a critical mass of films and users. “It could take time for us to achieve a large critical mass of films and users, but I have no doubt we’re going to get there,” Larraín stated.
