Nicki Minaj has publicly declared her support for Donald Trump, explaining her political stance is influenced by a lack of response from Democratic leaders and her criticism of Jay-Z.

Discontent with Democrats

In an interview with Time, Minaj revealed her disenchantment with the Democratic Party began after her home was repeatedly “swatted” and she received no response from Governor Gavin Newsom despite her requests for a meeting. Minaj expressed frustration, saying, “He just completely ignored me, with all the money I spent in taxes.”

Republican Support

In 2025, Republican congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna offered her assistance to Minaj, which solidified Minaj's interest in the Republican Party. Initially hesitant to reveal her political views due to potential backlash from her fanbase, Minaj stated, “I was shocked. I’d never seen anyone in politics treat me that way. That’s what made me say that I don’t care to keep this a secret anymore.”

Minaj admitted she had been cautious about expressing her views publicly, fearing it would alienate her supporters. “I felt that way already about him, just that I didn’t dare act like that publicly,” Minaj noted. She highlighted the pressure within the music industry to align with Democratic views.

Rift with Jay-Z

Minaj also pointed to her issues with Jay-Z as a factor in her political shift. She stated, “I think Jay-Z ended up costing Obama a lot, whether he knows it or not. Lots of rappers don’t like Jay-Z and were afraid to say it.” Jay-Z has maintained a visible friendship with President Obama, including Obama inducting Jay-Z into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 and Jay-Z campaigning for Obama.

Response to Obama’s Speech

Minaj further distanced herself from the Democrats following a 2024 speech by Obama supporting Kamala Harris, which called for Black men to vote for a female president. Minaj explained, “I just saw so many videos of Black men saying that they didn’t like the way they felt about that speech that Obama gave. They felt like they weren’t being listened to.”

The rapper’s statements highlight a growing ideological shift and her dissatisfaction with Democratic leaders, alongside her newfound openness in political affiliations.
