Netflix has pulled the plug on 'The Boroughs', a sci-fi series featuring Geena Davis, despite its presence in the platform's top 10. The show, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, was produced by Matt and Ross Duffer.
Geena Davis' Perfect Role
Davis was drawn to the character of Renee, a former music manager in a retirement community with an unusual twist. "I was like, 'This is crazy how perfect this is for me,'" Davis told The Hollywood Reporter. "They said, ‘Well, we wrote it with you in mind, hoping you would say yes.’”
The series, which premiered on May 21, also starred Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Bill Pullman, Denis O’Hare, and Clarke Peters. It followed retirees uncovering a sinister plot involving brain fluid theft.
Unexpected Cancellation
Despite positive reception, Netflix announced the show's cancellation, leaving the cast without an explanation. "Honestly, I don’t know what happened," said Davis. "It’s probably rare for a show to not get picked up while it’s still in the top 10."
The creators had structured the series to avoid cliffhangers, aiming to tell a complete story each season. Davis suggested a new series with the same team but different storylines.
Emmy Contention and Future Prospects
Despite cancellation, 'The Boroughs' remains available for streaming and could still be in the running for Emmy nominations. Davis expressed interest in returning should the series be revived or spun off.
Her character’s relationship with Carlos Miranda's character Paz was a highlight, featuring some of the steamiest scenes of her career. Davis dismissed concerns about their age difference and noted the positive audience reception.
Geena Davis on Aging and Roles
Davis is not planning to retire anytime soon. "There’s nothing different about me," she said about reaching her current age. She remains active in film, currently working with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Budapest.
As the chair of the Bentonville Film Festival, Davis continues to advocate for inclusion in media through her Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which has made strides in achieving gender parity in children's entertainment.
Her career continues to reflect her commitment to strong female roles, with hopes for more stories centered on older characters.
