Michael Jackson Biopic Tops Korean Box Office

The Michael Jackson biographical drama “Michael” dominated the South Korean box office over the weekend of May 15-17, securing the top spot.

Box Office Success

“Michael,” released by Lionsgate and Universal Pictures, earned $3.6 million from 470,375 admissions, according to KOBIS, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council. This accounted for a commanding 51.03% share of the weekend market. The film has accumulated a total gross of $4.8 million from 647,916 admissions since its mid-week debut on May 13.

Competition and Runners-Up

The high-fashion comedy sequel “The Devil Wears Prada 2” followed, garnering $897,275 from 120,545 admissions. Since its late-April release, it has amassed $9.6 million from 1,444,286 admissions. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” took third place, generating $829,213 from 123,558 tickets over the weekend, with its cumulative gross now at $9.4 million.

Local and International Films

In fourth place, the local horror-thriller “Salmokji: Whispering Water,” directed by Lee Sang-min, added $669,972 to reach a total of $21.6 million from 3,169,730 admissions. The Hollywood sci-fi film “Project Hail Mary” secured the fifth spot with $279,821, bringing its total South Korean revenue to $21.4 million. A re-release of “Top Gun: Maverick” followed in sixth, earning $136,047 and increasing its Korean gross to $59 million.

Further Rankings

“The King’s Warden” landed in seventh place, adding $92,473 in its 15th week, with a total of 16,863,925 admissions and $108.3 million in revenue. The local horror-comedy sequel “Teaching Practice: Idiot Girls and School Ghost 2” debuted in eighth, earning $74,384. Directed by Kim Min-ha, the film stars Han Sun-hwa and has grossed $123,356 since May 13.

Ninth place was taken by a specialty screening of the 2004 romance “If Only,” which earned $96,354. Jung Woo’s directorial debut “Audition 109” rounded out the top ten, with $86,804, bringing its total to $2.6 million.

The weekend’s overall market gross was $6.8 million, an improvement from the previous week’s $4.9 million.
