Jason Momoa has stepped down from his role in director Justin Lin's upcoming film adaptation of the Helldivers video game series, a project under development at Sony Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Film Details and Production
Despite Momoa's departure, the movie remains on track for a theatrical release set for November 10, 2027. The script, penned by Gary Dauberman, is based on the 2015 video game and its sequel, which have collectively sold over 12 million units. Helldivers follows a squad of elite soldiers tasked with defending Super Earth against alien threats.
Studio Presentation and Background
The project was initially announced at CES last year and was highlighted at Sony's CinemaCon presentation earlier this year. The video game, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, debuted in March 2015.
Production Team and Future Releases
Producers for the film include Lin, Hutch Parker, and Asad Qizilbash. Momoa's cinematic presence remains strong, with upcoming roles in Supergirl, releasing June 26, as well as Street Fighter and Dune: Part Three. His 2027 projects include A Minecraft Movie Squared and Animal Friends with Ryan Reynolds.
Momoa's Career and Lin's Direction
Lin is renowned for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise and recently directed 2025's Last Days. Momoa's departure was initially reported by Deadline.
