Walking the runway at New York Fashion Week for Eckhaus Latta's fall 2026 show was a nerve-wracking but exhilarating 90-second experience for a first-time model.
Pre-Show Jitters
I was pacing in my apartment, practicing my walk, ahead of my call time for the Eckhaus Latta show. The anxiety of focusing on something usually done without thought, like walking, was overwhelming.
Stylist Thistle Brown's invitation to walk in the show was too tempting to refuse. Despite not being a model, the opportunity to work with Eckhaus Latta, known for their unique take on New York and LA fashion, was irresistible.
Eckhaus Latta's Unique Approach
Since 2012, Eckhaus Latta has showcased a blend of professional and amateur models, including artists and critics, reflecting their community-centric approach. This inclusive method has set them apart in the fashion world.
Realizing I needed guidance, I reached out to supermodel Alton Mason, who advised, “Walk like you’re about to go get that money.” This advice was my mantra during practice.
Showtime Nerves
With minutes to go, anxiety set in. Dressed in gray jeans, a matching polo, and a wool cardigan, I was ready but nervous about navigating the complex venue at 15 Orient in Tribeca.
Rachel Chandler, known for the “nodel” look, had advised me on posture for the photographer pit: “Keep your chin down and your eyes up.” This advice was crucial as the show began.
The Runway Experience
As the James K soundtrack played, I was the fourth to walk. A headset-wearing woman cued my step onto the catwalk. Surprisingly, the nerves dissipated, and the walk felt natural, albeit with an adrenaline rush.
In those 90 seconds, I nailed my turns and maintained focus, avoiding eye contact with the press. Before I knew it, I was back behind the curtain, exhilarated and wishing for a longer runway.
