Skechers, traditionally known for comfort rather than style, has seen its football boots sell out during the World Cup, driven by Harry Kane's endorsement. Kane signed with Skechers in 2023, departing from a long-term relationship with Nike.
Skechers Steps into the Spotlight
By partnering with Kane, Skechers launched its SKX line, starting with the SKX 1. The brand, previously not associated with top-tier football, found itself competing against established brands.
“When it comes to Harry Kane’s Skechers boots, the first thing that deserves praise is Skechers itself,” said Francesco Mele, founder of Boots Club.
The SKX 1 was soon followed by the SKX 2, featuring FitKnit technology and ergonomic lacing. The boots gained a reputation for comfort, a hallmark of Skechers.
World Cup Drives Demand
Each Harry Kane goal at the World Cup has served as an advertisement for Skechers. As England progresses through the tournament, demand for Kane’s SKX 2 boots has surged. Initially available in full-size runs, they quickly sold out.
One reseller noted the unexpected demand: “I bought a few pairs at the start of the World Cup without really thinking they’d sell. But the more England kept winning, the quicker they disappeared.”
A Shift in Perception
This surge in demand is unusual for Skechers, a brand not typically associated with high demand or hype. England fan Jack Strong remarked on the brand's transformation: “What was once my dad's dedicated gardening shoe is now making waves on grass far beyond my childhood back garden.”
Kane's Influence on the Market
Francesco Mele emphasized the synergy between Kane's performance and the SKX 02 boots: “Kane’s performances speak louder than any technical explanation. His SKX 02 has become an integral part of that success.”
While Skechers might not dethrone Nike or Adidas soon, Harry Kane has achieved something significant by elevating the brand's status in football culture.
