Cohen Media Group has acquired U.S. distribution rights for 'Lady,' the debut feature from Nigerian-born writer-director Olive Nwosu, sold by HanWay Films.
Sundance and Berlinale Premieres
The acquisition comes after the film's world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival's World Dramatic Cinema Competition, where it won the Special Jury Award for best ensemble cast. 'Lady' also had its European premiere at the 2026 Berlinale.
Negotiation and Cast
The deal was negotiated by Jessica Lacy at Gersh and Gabrielle Stewart, CEO of HanWay Films, representing the filmmakers, and Robert Aaronson, EVP of Cohen Media Group. The film stars Jessica Gabriel, Amanda Oruh, Tinuade Jemiseye, Bucci Franklin, and Seun Kuti.
Plot and Setting
Set in Lagos, the story follows Lady, one of the city's few female cab drivers, as she seeks sisterhood and freedom. Her routine is disrupted when Pinky, a childhood friend turned sex worker, reappears, dragging Lady into a whirlwind of Lagos nightlife.
Production and Soundtrack
Produced by Ossian International, Good Gate, and Stella Nwimo, with co-producers Adé Sultan Sangodoyin and Jamiu Shoyode of Emperium Films, 'Lady' was developed with Film4 and financed by the BFI, Film4, Screen Scotland, Level Forward, and Amplify Capital. The soundtrack includes contemporary African jazz and dance music from artists like EDAOTO and Deto Black, alongside diaspora names such as Little Simz and Obongjayar.
Robert Aaronson highlighted, “We’re proud to champion a new and exciting international voice in cinemas to American audiences.”
