Charlie Javice Seeks Pardon Amid Legal Woes

Charlie Javice, the founder of the now-defunct startup Frank, is reportedly seeking a presidential pardon by reaching out to individuals close to former President Donald Trump, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. Her name has yet to appear on the official clemency request list at the Justice Department.

Pardon List Growing

The list of pardon requests is expanding rapidly. The Trump administration is reportedly considering issuing approximately 250 pardons this summer in celebration of America's 250th anniversary. Among those seeking clemency are several white-collar defendants, including notable figures such as Sam Bankman-Fried.

JPMorgan's Concerns

JPMorgan is likely uneasy about Javice's pursuit of a pardon. In September of last year, she was convicted of fabricating millions of customer accounts to inflate the value of her company before selling it to the bank for $175 million. She is currently serving a sentence of over seven years but is appealing, claiming the case against her was unjust.

JPMorgan's concerns are compounded by its history with Trump. In early 2021, the bank closed accounts associated with Trump and his businesses shortly after the January 6 Capitol riot. Trump has labeled these actions as political "debanking" and has since filed a lawsuit against JPMorgan and CEO Jamie Dimon for $5 billion, though the bank denies any political motives.

Powerful Allies

Javice is not without influential allies. Marc Rowan, CEO of Apollo Global Management and an early investor in Frank, testified in her favor during her trial. Rowan has been a donor to Trump's campaigns and has contributed millions more to Republican congressional groups since Trump's reelection.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Javice's efforts to secure a pardon will bear fruit. Her case highlights the complexities and political entanglements that can accompany high-profile pardon requests.
