Pawel Pawlikowski's 'Fatherland' premiered at Cannes, earning a four-and-a-half-minute standing ovation at the Palais’ Grand Lumiére Theatre.
Director Pawlikowski's Response
Pawlikowski, known for 'Ida' and 'Cold War', expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you so much, I hope at least half of you really meant it.” He reflected on the effort involved in creating the film, adding, “Being here with these beautiful people who worked on this film in hard conditions, we have arrived at Versailles — this beautiful temple to cinema — and all our strife and troubles are forgotten.”
Red Carpet and Cast
On the red carpet, Pawlikowski was joined by stars Sandra Hüller, Hanns Zischler, August Diehl, Devid Striesow, and Anna Madeley. Hüller, a favorite at Cannes, was notably applauded. The film, in German, follows Thomas Mann (Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Hüller) as they return to post-war Germany, confronting both personal and national histories.
Film Background
'Fatherland' reunites Pawlikowski with cinematographer Lukasz Żal and co-writer Hendrik Handloegten. His previous visit to Cannes with 'Cold War' in 2018 resulted in a Best Director award. Pawlikowski's 'Ida' won the Best International Feature Oscar in 2015.
Sandra Hüller's Career Highlights
Hüller, acclaimed for roles in 'Anatomy of a Fall' and 'Zone of Interest', continues her rise with a Best Performance win at Berlinale for 'Rose'. She recently starred with Ryan Gosling in 'Project Hail Mary' and is set to appear alongside Tom Cruise in Alejandro G. Iñárritu's 'Digger'.
Hüller will join Scott Feinberg for a live recording of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast in Cannes.
