BBC's newly appointed director general, Matt Brittin, warned staff of 'tough choices' in his initial memo, emphasizing the broadcaster's crucial role amidst current challenges.
Brittin's Vision for BBC
Describing himself as a 'lifelong fan of the BBC,' Brittin, formerly with Google, highlighted his recent meetings with teams across the UK and internationally to 'listen and learn.' He praised the BBC as a 'priceless asset,' essential for both national identity and global perception.
'Today, the BBC has never been more needed,' Brittin stated, underscoring its role as a trusted news provider and a unifying force in the creative economy. He acknowledged the 'very real challenges' the organization faces, asserting the need for 'courage and vision' during uncertain times.
Focus on Technology and Cost-Cutting
Drawing on his tech background, Brittin emphasized moving with 'velocity and clarity,' ensuring the BBC delivers the right stories in suitable formats and platforms. He acknowledged impending cost-cutting measures, stating, 'Tough choices are unavoidable as we make savings.'
Brittin's approach involves reimagining the BBC, asking, 'If we were inventing the BBC today, what would we do?' He called for responses with 'clarity, pace and purpose.'
Strategic Priorities
Brittin outlined three main focuses: negotiating the broadcaster's future Royal Charter with the government, maintaining 'editorial excellence,' and 'increased velocity.' This includes necessary savings and simplifying the BBC for both staff and audiences.
He tasked the BBC's executive committee with addressing 'editorial excellence' to ensure its sustainability, involving 'backing the right people to make decisions with clear accountability.'
Transition from Tim Davie
Brittin succeeds Tim Davie, whose tenure was marred by scandals, including incidents involving top newsreader Huw Davies and a $10 billion lawsuit from President Trump over a falsified quote in 'Panorama.' Concurrently, the BBC is in discussions with the government for more funding amidst rising costs.
As the BBC's 18th director general, Brittin's leadership comes at a pivotal time for the broadcaster.
