Avan Jogia's Next Act: Directing and World-Building

Avan Jogia is steering his career in a new direction, focusing on world-building projects and film directing after a successful start on Nickelodeon’s Victorious and the teen drama Twisted.

From Nickelodeon to New Horizons

Jogia, 34, describes his early career as being part of the 'kids’ television program machine.' Reflecting on his journey, he says, '[After] 20 years of having been making stuff, I might be arriving at what my boundaries are.' He emphasizes the importance of deciding how he wants to create.

His role in the Prime Video thriller 56 Days opposite Dove Cameron and the recent release of Backrooms, directed by Kane Parsons, mark his shift toward more mature and complex projects.

Directing Ambitions

After Twisted, Jogia took control of his career path, participating in Sundance films and the mini-series Tut with Ben Kingsley. 'I love acting and will continue my whole life,' Jogia states, but directing offers him a new creative outlet.

He wrote his first directed film at 23, driven by a desire for roles that allowed more character depth. 'I want actors to come in and swing on a character,' he explains.

Collaborating with Halsey

Jogia is set to direct and co-write Replacer with his fiancée, Halsey. He praises their collaborative dynamic: 'We have a similar writing sensibility, which made the process super easy.'

Jogia wrote the film to provide Halsey with the type of roles she missed while building her music career. 'Part of loving someone is seeing all the different versions of them,' he says.

The Success of 56 Days

Starring in 56 Days was a deliberate choice, despite Jogia’s previous avoidance of romantic leads. He appreciated the depth of his character, Oliver, saying, 'There’s a constant tension there.'

The show’s success was unexpected but gratifying. 'I’m humbled,' Jogia remarks, acknowledging the cultural impact of the series. Despite the success, he’s intent on pursuing diverse opportunities.

Jogia remains open to fantasy roles, inspired by childhood favorites like The Lord of the Rings. His passion for acting is rooted in exploring imaginative worlds, a pursuit he continues through directing and acting.
