If 'Schmigadoon!', the Broadway adaptation of the Emmy-winning TV series, secures any of the 12 Tony nominations on Sunday, Apple TV may achieve an EGOT faster than any other streamer.
Apple TV's Quick Rise to EGOT
Apple TV, which launched in November 2019, would complete the prestigious EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) in just over six and a half years if 'Schmigadoon!' wins. This would outpace Netflix, which holds the current record of 12 years from launch to EGOT, achieved when 'Stranger Things: The First Shadow' won a Tony last year.
Previous Wins in Major Awards
Apple TV's journey to this point included a 2020 Emmy win for Billy Crudup in 'The Morning Show', a 2022 Oscar for 'CODA', and a Grammy in February for Chris Stapleton's song 'Bad As I Used to Be' from the film 'F1'.
Streamers' EGOT Status
Among other streamers, Hulu, founded in 2007, lacks only a Tony. Prime Video, launched in 2006, and HBO Max, started in 2020, need both a Grammy and a Tony. YouTube and Paramount+ have only Emmys, as do Disney+ and Peacock.
Hollywood Studios and Tony Awards
Major Hollywood studios, founded long before the Tony Awards began in 1947, have a varied history with theatre. NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Pictures, and Walt Disney Company have all backed Tony-winning productions, but often decades after their founding.
