Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI in verified business customers, according to the latest AI Index from fintech firm Ramp.
Ramp's Survey Findings
The data, gathered from Ramp's clients' expense records, indicates 34.4% of businesses are now paying for Anthropic services, compared to 32.3% for OpenAI. This marks the first time Anthropic has taken the lead in this competitive space.
Ramp economist Ara Kharazian commented to TechCrunch, "Anthropic has already been in the lead amongst the high adoption groups like finance, tech, professional services. It’s across the other firms where OpenAI still has a lead, but that has been shrinking over the past couple of months."
Sample Size and Industry Trends
While the index is limited to companies using Ramp, it includes data from over 50,000 businesses, offering a broad view of market trends. Other platforms, like OpenRouter, also reflect this shift. OpenAI last led Anthropic in December 2025 on OpenRouter's leaderboard.
Anthropic's Growth Strategy
Over the past 12 months, Anthropic's market share grew significantly. In May 2025, only 9% of businesses were paying for their products. This figure has since risen by 26%. During the same period, OpenAI's share decreased by 1%, while the overall use of AI products rose by 9%.
Kharazian highlighted Anthropic's successful strategy: "What Anthropic did worked really well, which was—start with a very technical customer base, focus on their needs, really succeed in execution and then start broadening out through tools like Cowork."
Future Outlook
Kharazian expressed skepticism about whether Anthropic's advantage will persist, as detailed in a blog post. Nonetheless, the past year has demonstrated the effectiveness of Anthropic's strategic choices.
