AMD is set to expand its FSR 4.1 upscaling technology to older graphics cards, according to an announcement by Jack Huynh, AMD’s head of computing and graphics, on X. The rollout will begin with RDNA 3 GPUs this July, and will extend to RDNA 2 chips in early 2027.
Upcoming Rollout for Radeon RX 7000-series
This summer's update will enable owners of Radeon RX 7000-series chips to use AMD's upscaling technology across more than 300 supported games. These include popular titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 6, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The broader expansion to RDNA 2 architecture next year will allow devices like the Steam Deck to support this advanced technology.
FSR 4.1’s Initial Launch
AMD initially launched the FSR 4.1 update for Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards in March. The update enhances the AI-powered upscaling technology, aimed at boosting performance while delivering sharper visuals and smoother gameplay.
Technical Adjustments for Older Hardware
AMD had to adapt FSR 4.1 to run on older GPUs since RDNA 3 chips lack the necessary hardware for this technology. Jack Huynh stated that AMD had "to carefully tune, optimize, and validate the model" to ensure compatibility. "We tested across hundreds of PC configurations in hundreds of games to ensure visuals are sharp and everything works out of the box," said Huynh.
These efforts highlight AMD's commitment to making cutting-edge technology accessible to a broader range of users. With the ongoing expansion of FSR 4.1, more gamers will be able to experience improved graphics performance without needing to upgrade to the latest hardware.
