X Introduces History Tab for Saved Content

X has launched a new History tab on its app, initially for iOS users, consolidating bookmarks, likes, videos, and articles into a single accessible location. The update, announced by X's head of product Nikita Bier, aims to enhance how users keep track of their favorite content. Bier noted, "It's a better way to keep track of all your favorite content and return to things you want to finish reading or watching later."

Enhancing User Experience

The History tab renames the Bookmarks button in X’s mobile app menu. It separates saved content into four distinct tabs: bookmarks, likes, videos, and articles. While bookmarks and likes are user-driven saves, the videos and articles tabs automatically populate based on user activity within the app. According to Bier, the History section remains private to the user.

Consolidating Features

This addition makes X resemble a web browser, allowing users to revisit previously viewed content without explicit saving actions. It streamlines the app's features, bringing bookmarks and likes into one cohesive space, rather than their previous separate locations within the app.

Boosting Long-Form Content

The move may increase the use of X’s long-form article format, a feature X has been promoting for businesses and creators seeking to share content beyond the platform’s standard post length of 280 characters. This change provides users with a personalized news reader experience within the app, tracking articles of interest during their scrolls.

Seizing New Opportunities

This update arrives amid declining referral traffic for web publishers from platforms like Facebook and Google, due to changing algorithms and AI-powered experiences. X sees this as an opportunity to attract publishers and creators to generate content directly on its platform, offering built-in distribution and discovery.
