A new Broadway jukebox musical centered on "Weird Al" Yankovic is officially in development. Titled Dare to Be Stupid, the production will feature a soundtrack of Yankovic's renowned parody songs, according to Deadline.

Parody Hits on Stage

The musical will showcase hits like “White & Nerdy,” a parody of Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’,” “Amish Paradise,” a take on Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise,” “Eat It,” mimicking Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” “Like a Surgeon,” spoofing Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” and “Smells Like Nirvana,” riffing on Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Yankovic's Broadway Aspiration

“Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I’ve always wanted to be a part of the New York theatre community,” Yankovic stated in a press release to Deadline. He humorously added that Broadway has been “severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment” and expressed hope that this musical would address that void.

Direction by Alex Timbers

Alex Timbers will direct the musical. Timbers has a notable track record, having directed All In, a Broadway show inspired by the Magnetic Fields’ 69 Love Songs, and the disco musical Here Lies Love by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim.

Yankovic has remained in the spotlight following the 2022 biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, starring Daniel Radcliffe. He is currently engaged in a North American tour with 90 shows scheduled until mid-October.
