AI voice platform Vapi has achieved a $500 million valuation after Amazon Ring chose it over 40 competitors to manage its inbound phone traffic.
Amazon's Selection Process
Looking to address a surge in customer-support calls during the last holiday season, Amazon Ring evaluated over 40 AI vendors before selecting Vapi. All of Ring's inbound calls are now handled by Vapi's platform, boosting customer satisfaction scores. Jason Mitura, vice president of software development at Amazon Ring, noted the platform’s impact, stating, "A lot of AI tools promise great outcomes — Vapi has delivered on them."
Vapi's Journey and Recent Funding
Founded by Jordan Dearsley and Nikhil Gupta, Vapi started as an AI therapist project developed by Dearsley in 2023. Realizing the broader potential of their low-latency voice infrastructure, the duo pivoted to launch Vapi in 2024. The platform offers tools for building and managing voice agents for various business functions.
The recent deployment with Amazon Ring facilitated a $50 million Series B funding round led by Peak XV Partners, among others, raising Vapi's total funding to $72 million. The startup's annual recurring revenue is reportedly in the "healthy" eight figures.
Expanding Customer Base
Vapi has processed over 1 billion calls, with current daily volumes between 1 million and 5 million. Enterprise clients like Kavak, Instawork, New York Life, and Intuit contribute significantly to this figure. Vapi also boasts a self-serve developer platform with over 1 million users.
Future Plans and Industry Position
Vapi plans to expand its engineering and go-to-market teams with the new funding. As part of a growing AI voice industry, Vapi distinguishes itself by focusing on infrastructure rather than pre-packaged applications, granting enterprises more control over voice agent behavior. "The golden problem is taking this indeterminate beast that is a model and taming it," said Dearsley. "If you can do that, then you can provide value to the world."
