Uber Expands Beyond Rides and Deliveries

Uber is expanding its services beyond ride-hailing and delivery by introducing hotel bookings, boat rentals, and financial products, while exploring AI and autonomous vehicle data.

New Services and Partnerships

This year, Uber has added hotel bookings through a partnership with Expedia, boat rentals in Europe, and a 'shop for me' concierge feature. According to Uber Chief Product Officer Sachin Kansal, travel is the third pillar for Uber's growth, with 1.5 billion trips annually occurring outside users' home cities. Uber aims to enhance the travel experience, integrating its services beyond just rides and food delivery.

Financial Services and Membership Growth

Uber's financial services target drivers, couriers, and merchants, offering products like the Uber Pro card. While consumer financial services are being explored, Uber currently provides Uber credits as part of its membership program. Uber One, with 51 million members, accounts for half of Uber's bookings, showing increased cross-usage of services among members.

Autonomous Vehicles and AI

Uber is advancing its AV Labs unit, focusing on equipping vehicles with sensors to gather extensive driving data. This initiative supports Uber's autonomous vehicle partners, including Waymo, despite competitive overlaps. Kansal emphasizes Uber's hybrid network strategy, balancing human drivers with autonomous vehicles to meet demand.

Data Collaboration and AI Integration

Uber is also involved in data-labeling for AI companies, providing commercial data through its earner base. While AV Labs data sharing is still developing, Uber's platform already incorporates AI tools to assist drivers and enhance user experience. Features like an earner assistant, grocery cart assistant, and voice-activated ride requests illustrate AI's growing role in Uber's operations.

As Uber continues to innovate, Kansal prioritizes refining existing products while selectively investing in new ideas. Despite numerous competitors, Uber remains focused on delivering value to its users.
