Tom Holland recently addressed the ongoing debate over AI's impact on creativity, asserting that artificial intelligence lacks the soul necessary for true artistic creation.
AI and the Human Experience
Appearing on Spain's “El Hormiguero” talk show with Zendaya, Holland stated, “Creativity is safe from AI because creativity has to do with the human experience. It's about emotions, it's about understanding one another.” He emphasized that while AI can process data, it fails to grasp the nuances of human emotions, such as happiness and sadness.
“The way artists paint, it's not about what they're copying, it's about expressing themselves. So I feel protected,” Holland added.
Upcoming Projects
Holland is gearing up for a busy summer, starring as Telemachus in Christopher Nolan's “The Odyssey,” which releases on July 24, followed by his return to the Marvel universe in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” on July 31. Zendaya joins him in both films.
Industry Perspectives on AI
The actor's comments come amid growing concerns within Hollywood over AI's role in the industry. Guillermo del Toro recently warned about the threat of “image illiteracy” and “cinema illiteracy” due to AI advancements.
Conversely, other industry figures like Reese Witherspoon and Sandra Bullock advocate for understanding and integrating AI into daily life. Martin Scorsese has partnered with an AI firm to enhance his filmmaking process through AI-assisted storyboarding.
Holland's Recent Work
Holland's recent credits include “The Crowded Room,” “Uncharted,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” adding to his growing repertoire of diverse roles.
