TikTok is launching an ad-free subscription plan in the UK, priced at £3.99 per month, targeting users aged 18 and older. This new plan, set to roll out over the coming months, offers subscribers an ad-free experience and ensures their data is not used for advertising.
GDPR Compliance
The introduction of this subscription model is believed to be influenced by the UK's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). GDPR restricts companies from collecting personal data for advertising without user consent, prompting TikTok to provide an alternative that aligns with these regulations.
Statement from TikTok's UK Leadership
In a press release, Kris Boger, TikTok's UK managing director, emphasized the dual focus on user choice and business growth. "Choice for our community and growth for UK businesses go hand in hand on TikTok," Boger stated. He highlighted that advertising helps numerous British businesses expand their customer base, improve sales, and generate employment, while the ad-free option enhances user control over their experience.
Testing and Future Plans
TikTok began testing the ad-free plan in 2023. As of now, there is no confirmation on whether this option will be extended to users in the United States. The company continues to evaluate the plan's impact and user reception in the UK before considering further expansion.
