Spotify has announced a partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG) to enable Premium subscribers to create AI-generated covers and remixes of their favorite songs. This initiative will feature revenue sharing with artists whose work is used.
Details of the Partnership
The companies have reached a licensing agreement, though specific pricing and a launch date for the tool remain undisclosed. Spotify had previously signaled its intentions to collaborate with major labels, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe, to develop artist-centric AI products.
Spotify emphasized that its AI tools would be developed through upfront agreements rather than seeking forgiveness post-launch. This stance appears to be a direct response to competitors like Suno, who have faced legal challenges.
Artist Participation and Compensation
Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström stressed the importance of consent, credit, and compensation for participating artists and songwriters. "Solving hard problems for music is what Spotify does, and fan-made covers and remixes are next," Norström said, highlighting the collaborative efforts with UMG to enhance the music ecosystem.
UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge praised the development for its potential to strengthen artist-fan relationships while creating new revenue streams. As of now, it is unclear which UMG artists have opted into the program.
Legal Landscape in AI Music
AI music pioneers like Suno and Udio have previously encountered legal issues, leading to significant settlements with major labels. In November, Suno agreed to a $500 million settlement with Warner Music Group, and UMG settled separately with Udio. Despite this, Suno continues to face copyright claims from both UMG and Sony Music, while Udio is negotiating with Sony.
Spotify's direct engagement with labels for its AI initiative reflects consumer demand for such tools. While UMG is the first confirmed partner, Spotify has hinted at more collaborations without specifying details.
Investor Day Announcements
The AI music tool news coincided with Spotify's Investor Day announcements, which included an AI-powered audiobook creation tool, new AI features for podcasters, a desktop app for producing personal podcasts with AI, and exclusive concert tickets for top fans.
