Spotify has announced a new initiative in collaboration with Universal Music Group (UMG) to offer AI-generated remixes and covers as a feature for Premium subscribers. This tool will be available as a paid add-on and will allow users to generate remixes of streaming songs.
Partnership with Major Labels
Last October, Spotify disclosed its collaboration with UMG along with other major labels such as Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe. The goal was to create 'responsible AI products.' Although the specifics were not clear at the time, this new AI remix feature appears to be the first outcome of that partnership.
Artist Participation and Compensation
The program emphasizes artist choice, fair compensation, and enhancing the artist-fan connection. Artists will have the option to opt out, but those who participate will earn royalties from the AI-generated remixes. Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström stated, "What we’re building is grounded in consent, credit, and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part."
UMG's Perspective
Sir Lucian Grainge, CEO of UMG, highlighted the initiative's potential to bridge the gap between artists and fans. He commented, "The most valuable innovations in the music business always bring artists and fans closer together. That principle is at the heart of this pioneering AI-enabled superfan initiative, which is designed to support human artistry, deepen fan relationships, and create additional revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters."
Spotify has yet to announce the exact launch date or additional costs for the AI remix tool beyond the Premium subscription.
