Sombr set the American Music Awards stage ablaze on Monday night in Las Vegas with a high-energy performance of his hit song "Homewrecker," complete with an onstage downpour reminiscent of his rain-soaked New York City hometown over Memorial Day weekend.
Performance and Style
The 20-year-old singer donned leather bell-bottoms and a loose black button-down shirt, differing from his earlier attire when he accepted the Best Alternative/Rock Song award for "Back to Friends." His electrifying performance of "Homewrecker," which he also showcased at the BRIT Awards, is part of his yet-to-be-released sophomore album and is nominated for the Song of the Summer at the AMAs.
Chart-Topping Year
Sombr's performance at the AMAs is another milestone in a breakout year marked by chart success with singles like “Undressed,” “Back to Friends,” and “12 to 12.” Earlier this year, he performed at the Grammy Awards, where he was in the running for Best New Artist alongside Addison Rae, Alex Warren, the Marías, Leon Thomas, Lola Young, Katseye, and Olivia Dean, who took home the award.
Rising Star
Reflecting on his rapid rise, Sombr shared with Variety in a Behind the Song episode, “I went to bed just a normal high school kid, and I wake up the next day, it’s viral. Literally the next day. Every record label is in my inbox.” Initially met with silence from record labels, his sudden popularity led to a swift signing in Los Angeles.
His father was skeptical of his newfound fame, initially saying, “I don’t believe you.” But the whirlwind was real, as Sombr quickly transitioned from a high school student to a major record deal holder, marking the start of his burgeoning career.
