Oz Pearlman, known as Oz the Mentalist, faces new scrutiny after an exposé by Stevie Baskin on the podcast Pablo Torre Finds Out revealed alleged deceptive practices behind his mind-reading acts.
High-Profile Performances
Pearlman has become a household name through appearances on March Madness coverage, HBO's Hard Knocks, Joe Rogan's podcast, and the White House Correspondents' Dinner for President Trump. Known for his ability to guess names, PINs, and other private details, Pearlman is the most televised and followed mentalist globally.
However, a five-hour, 11-minute video by Australian investigator Stevie Baskin suggests Pearlman's tricks involve more than just reading micro-expressions, as he claims.
Unveiling Meta-Deception
Baskin's video, posted on January 15, details Pearlman's use of “meta-deception,” which involves deceiving subjects about the nature and timing of the deception itself. Baskin alleges the use of unaired pre-show work, technology, and surveillance in Pearlman's act.
According to Baskin, Pearlman may prompt subjects to perform Google searches on their own devices, with results transmitted to his phone. Other techniques include using gimmicked notepads and tablets that send written information via Bluetooth.
Ethical Concerns
Pearlman's methods have raised ethical questions even among magicians. His TED Talk, which he describes as “reverse-engineering the human mind,” is criticized for promoting mentalism without revealing the actual methods used. Baskin argues that Pearlman leverages the TED brand to validate his act.
Furthermore, Pearlman's bestselling book Read Your Mind: Proven Habits for Success from the World’s Greatest Mentalist is said to capitalize on non-existent abilities, providing advice on reading people that Baskin claims is misleading.
Lack of Response
Pearlman did not respond to The Hollywood Reporter’s request for comment on Baskin’s findings. As the debate continues, Pearlman's reputation as a mentalist faces significant challenges.
Baskin's video, which should arguably be a TED Talk itself, can be viewed on YouTube.
