Oura Launches Slimmer Ring 5 at $399

Oura has launched its fifth-generation smart ring, the Ring 5, priced from $399, boasting a design 40% smaller than its predecessor, with improved sensors and battery life.

Smaller and More Efficient Design

The Ring 5, available for preorder, ships June 4. Oura has reduced the ring's width by two millimeters and its thickness by 30%, responding to consumer requests for a smaller, thinner device, according to Maz Brumand, VP of Product at Oura. The redesign involved overhauling the ring's mechanical, electrical, optical, battery, and sensing architectures.

  • Available in sizes 6 to 13
  • Six finishes: Gold, Deep Rose, Silver, Brushed Silver, Black, Stealth
  • Prices: Black and Silver at $399, others at $499

Competition Spurs Innovation

Oura's quicker release cycle—just a year and a half after Ring 4—reflects increased competition from companies like RingConn and Ultrahuman. The Ring 5's announcement comes just ahead of RingConn's Gen 3 launch.

Battery life has improved, now lasting six to nine days, compared to five to eight days with the Ring 4. Enhanced sensors provide better skin contact and are more accurate across diverse finger sizes and skin tones.

New Software Features

The Ring 5 introduces software updates including “Health Radar”, which tracks biometric signals like blood pressure and breathing. Blood Pressure Signals monitor overnight patterns for cardiovascular insights, while Nighttime Breathing offers a 30-day view of sleep-related breathing patterns.

Oura partners with Counsel Health to provide on-demand care via the app, requiring an additional fee on top of the $5.99 monthly subscription. Members can now import health data into the app for a comprehensive health overview.

Advanced Tracking and Health Insights

Oura's live activity tracking provides real-time workout metrics, with improved activity detection and compatibility with third-party heart-rate monitors. GLP-1 insights and a Brain Health Study are also new, aiming to track medication impacts and align cognitive tasks with physiological trends.

These updates position Oura to maintain its market position amidst growing competition, leveraging consumer data to enhance user experience and health insights.
