Noam Bettan Faces Eurovision Challenges in Vienna

Israeli singer Noam Bettan has rehearsed for months with simulated boos to prepare for anticipated protests during his Eurovision performance in Vienna.

Preparation Amidst Simulated Boos

Noam Bettan, the 28-year-old representing Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest, has incorporated simulated boos and heckling into his rehearsals for months. A source familiar with his preparations, who requested anonymity, noted that this approach aims to maintain Bettan's composure against potential disruptions while ensuring his performance remains dynamic.

Geopolitical Tensions and Eurovision

Protests against Israeli performers at Eurovision have been a recurring theme since the 2023 war in Gaza. Previous contestants, like Eden Golan in 2024 and Yuval Raphael in 2025, also faced significant disruptions. Bettan's own semifinal performance on May 12 featured boos and a "Free Palestine" heckle, as captured by online recordings. ORF, the Austrian broadcaster, opted not to use anti-booing technology, which was previously employed to mute audience jeers during broadcasts.

Controversy Over Anti-Booing Technology

Anti-booing technology remains divisive, with critics arguing it distorts the reality of performances, while supporters claim it prevents disruption. Bettan, aiming for Israel's fifth Eurovision victory, experienced additional protests during his semifinal, including a "Stop the Genocide" chant. Security personnel removed four individuals for causing disturbances.

Bettan's Personal Response

After the semifinal, Bettan acknowledged the boos but credited supportive fans for uplifting him. "I heard the boos, but quickly afterward, I heard calls from people on our side who were making noise and lifting me up," he said in a video. Bettan's song "Michelle," co-written with previous contestant Yuval Raphael, is interpreted by some as a metaphorical breakup song between Israel and Europe, reflecting his complex feelings towards the continent.

Influencer Miriam Strauss noted that the boos add a new dimension to the song, creating a dialogue between Bettan and the European audience. Similarly, British-Israeli influencer Eylon Levy described the song as a commentary on Europe's relationship with the Jewish people.
