Nicolas Cage is set to return as the serial killer Longlegs in a new film, now under Paramount Pictures, following the success of the 2024 horror thriller of the same name.
The Original Success
The original Longlegs film, released in 2024, featured Cage as a serial killer and Maika Monroe as an FBI agent on his trail. It became a breakout hit, grossing $128 million worldwide on a budget of less than $10 million, making it the highest-grossing independent film of the past decade according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Cage's Personal Connection
At the New York premiere of the Prime Video series Spider-Noir, Cage discussed his upcoming return to the character. He expressed a personal connection to the role, saying, “I guess you could say I have the pride of ownership of that character. That character is personal to me because I was influenced by my mom.” Cage clarified that his mother was not like the character, but he felt protective of the portrayal.
New Home at Paramount
The new film marks a surprising shift as it is being developed by Paramount, rather than Neon, the company behind the original. Cage mentioned his history with Paramount, referencing past family projects there, including Face/Off and The Godfather. “I hope that whatever happens, they have the same regard for movies and filmmakers,” Cage commented, acknowledging the studio’s new ownership under David Ellison.
Expanding the Universe
The upcoming Longlegs film, scheduled for release on January 14, 2028, is not a direct sequel. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the film is set in the Longlegs universe, suggesting a broader narrative scope. Details about the plot remain undisclosed, but the team behind it aims to build on the success of the original.
