Netflix has joined forces with filmmaker Olivia Newman to adapt Anjet Daanje's acclaimed novel The Remembered Soldier into a feature film. Newman, who wrote and directed the streaming hit Remarkably Bright Creatures, will helm the project for Netflix.
Proven Partnerships and Credentials
The film will see Newman reunite with producers Bryan Unkeless and Peter Craig under their Night Owl Stories banner. Gregory Cohen from Night Owl Stories will serve as the executive producer. Newman previously collaborated with Unkeless on her feature debut, First Match, a wrestling drama.

The Remembered Soldier, a novel that has garnered significant literary accolades, was a finalist for the National Book Award and made the International Booker Prize longlist. Published by New Vessel Press, the book was named one of New York Times’ 100 Notable Books of 2025, featured in the Wall Street Journal’s 10 Best Books of 2025, and won the 2026 Republic of Consciousness Prize.
A Story of Identity and Memory
Set in the aftermath of World War I, the Dutch historical novel follows a shell-shocked veteran with amnesia and Julienne Coppens, a woman who claims him as her long-lost husband, Amand, a photographer. The narrative explores themes of identity, memory, and the fragility of self, while weaving in a poignant love story.
Newman's Rising Profile
Olivia Newman continues to establish herself as a notable director of dramatic book adaptations. Her prior work includes Sony’s 2022 drama Where the Crawdads Sing. Newman's recent release, Remarkably Bright Creatures, starring Sally Field, quickly climbed into Netflix's top 10 and inspired viral TikTok reactions within days of its release.
Newman is represented by WME, Untitled Entertainment, and Jackoway Austen. The rights deal for Daanje's novel was managed by Hotchkiss Daily & Associates on behalf of Uitgeverij Passage and New Vessel Press.
