Marie Kreutzer's new film 'Gentle Monster' premieres at Cannes, exploring themes of honesty and power as it portrays a man's arrest for possession of child pornography.
Background and Inspiration
In 2023, Florian Teichtmeister, a lead actor in Kreutzer’s previous film 'Corsage,' was charged with possession of child pornography. Despite similarities, Kreutzer insists, "It didn’t really [influence 'Gentle Monster']. I was already working on the script before all that happened."
Léa Seydoux stars as Lucy Weiss, a singer-pianist whose life unravels during a police investigation into her husband Philip, played by Laurence Rupp, after illicit material is found on his computer. Kreutzer reveals that the inspiration came from a 2020 newspaper article that lingered with her, compelling her to tell a story through film.
Challenges and Decisions
Kreutzer faced potential shelving of 'Gentle Monster' due to the Teichtmeister scandal, but decided it was a reason to proceed. "It was crazy, but then I realized, ‘No, that’s maybe not a good reason to not make the film,’" she states.
The film centers on honesty, with Kreutzer stating, "When you see something in someone... believe it." She highlights how shame prevents confrontation in personal relationships and society.
Themes of Power and Gender
Kreutzer notes the prevalence of men in these crimes and questions societal teachings on power. "Why is power such an important thing for them?" she asks.
Jella Haase plays a policewoman confronting familial harassment, mirroring the film's central narrative. "All of the women in the film are basically trying to fix the lives of the men they live with," Kreutzer observes.
Family Dynamics and Independence
Catherine Deneuve portrays Lucy’s mother Eloise, a strong figure emphasizing independence. Kreutzer shares her personal experience with gender expectations, noting, "Women are still being judged... I always get the question, ‘Where’s your daughter?’"
The film challenges viewers to address difficult truths and societal norms regarding power dynamics and gender roles.
