The Kurdistan Film Commission unveiled a $2 million annual fund during Cannes 2026, aiming to position the region as a key international filming destination.
Empowering Kurdish Creatives
Launched under Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Qubad Talabani, the Kurdistan Film Commission seeks to empower local creatives and attract foreign filmmakers. "We want to show the world that despite political differences, cinema can unite," said Talabani at the Cannes event.
New Funding Initiatives
The commission, located in Slemani, announced the Kurdistan Film Fund during a session titled “Owning Our Story” at the Cannes Marché, offering $2 million annually to support filmmaking. Bavi Yassin, the commission's founder, emphasized the fund's aim to place Kurdish narratives at the forefront globally.
Building Bridges Through Film
Yassin highlighted the potential for Kurdistan to serve as a cinematic bridge between cultures. "For centuries, Kurdistan has been a bridge between civilizations," Talabani noted, stressing storytelling's role in changing perceptions and fostering unity.
Attracting Global Productions
The commission aims to attract productions by offering diverse locations and cost-effective filming. Kurdistan's varied landscapes can stand in for various global settings, offering filmmakers a wide range of options within a compact geography, reducing logistical complexities.
Training and International Collaborations
The commission has launched training programs and workshops, collaborating with international professionals to develop local talent. It also hosted a Kurdistan Producers Circle at Cannes, connecting local projects with global producers.
Despite regional challenges, Yassin remains optimistic. "Our presence at Cannes is a statement that we are open and building," she stated, emphasizing the importance of cultural support during conflicts.
