The Brooklyn Museum's Artist's Ball honored fashion innovator Iris van Herpen on Monday, drawing a crowd of fashion enthusiasts eager to experience her work up close.
Immersive Exhibit Experience
Guests, including Chloë Sevigny, Wes Gordon, and Derek Blasberg, were captivated by the opportunity to examine van Herpen's creations through microscopes. "I've only ever seen her work in photographs," Sevigny noted. "Seeing it up close, it's stunning. The artistry is undeniable."
Van Herpen expressed her aspirations for the exhibit in a conversation with Vogue, stating, "I hope that I widen people's perspective of what fashion is. I want to show them that it is in dialogue with art, but also with science, with engineering, with philosophy. And I hope people will feel a deep connection to nature because that is really the primal question of my work."
Celebratory Dinner and Performance
The evening continued with a dinner in the Beaux-Arts Court, where guests were seated at tables adorned with blue linens, iris flowers, and flickering candles. Principal dancers Taylor Stanley and Ava Sautter from the New York City Ballet performed in van Herpen's designs to Arca's Ether, demonstrating the fluidity of the garments.
Barbara Vogelstein, head of the museum's board of trustees, addressed attendees, emphasizing the museum's role in fostering understanding through art. "We believe that art is one of the most powerful tools we have for understanding ourselves and each other," she said.
Supporting Museum Initiatives
A Sotheby's-led auction followed the dinner, with proceeds supporting the museum's charitable and educational initiatives. Fabiola Beracasa Beckman, one of the event's hosts, remarked on the museum's unique programs, highlighting its support for incarcerated individuals and its focus on artists addressing the climate crisis.
After-Party and Closing Remarks
The evening concluded with a vibrant after-party featuring DJs Chi, Runna, and Madout. Guests danced under blue lights and a neon LOVERULES sign, enjoying the lively atmosphere. Iris van Herpen reflected on the evening, saying, "New York is the city of freedom and creativity. I feel at home here, and I know that so many others in this room do too."
As the night wound down, attendees left the museum, taking with them memories of an evening immersed in van Herpen's artistic vision.
