Danny Boyle's latest film, Ink, depicting Rupert Murdoch's ascent in the UK tabloid realm, is set to premiere at the 83rd Venice Film Festival, opening the event on September 2.
World Premiere in Venice
Ink will have its world premiere in competition at Venice. The biographical drama features Guy Pearce as Murdoch, with a screenplay adapted by James Graham from his own Tony-nominated play. Jack O’Connell co-stars as Larry Lamb, the editor enlisted by Murdoch to revamp The Sun into a powerhouse of British media. Claire Foy plays Jules Davies.
Boyle's First Venice Appearance
This marks Danny Boyle’s debut at the Venice Film Festival. “This is my baptism at the film festival,” Boyle stated, expressing his admiration for the city’s rich artistic heritage and the honor of launching the festival with his new film.
Setting the Scene in 1969
Set in 1969, the film chronicles Murdoch and Lamb's launch of The Sun newspaper, known for its far-right political stance and populist appeal, which became the world’s best-selling newspaper. Boyle noted the significance, saying, “Long before Fox News, click bait, and Truth Social; decades before Twitter, Facebook, Google & Only Fans, these two men created a new tabloid which against all the odds became the biggest selling newspaper in the world.”
Production Details
Produced by Boyle with Tessa Ross and Tracey Seaward, Ink is a collaboration of Studiocanal, Media Res, and House Productions. Executive producers include Anna Marsh, Ron Halpern, and Joe Naftalin for Studiocanal, which is handling worldwide sales and co-representing domestic distribution with WME Independent. Studiocanal will also oversee the film’s theatrical release in several territories, including the UK, France, Germany, Poland, Australia, and New Zealand.
Venice artistic director Alberto Barberan praised the film’s collaboration, highlighting “an Oscar-winning director, one of the leading playwrights on the London theater scene, and three of the most acclaimed actors in contemporary British cinema.”
The 2026 Venice Film Festival runs from September 2 to 12, with the full lineup announcement set for July 23.
